  • denoiser artifacts with glass - Next vs V5

Have been using VRay Next w/ Max 2021 - updated to V5 a few weeks ago and V5 update 1 last week. Getting blotchy artifacts with glass and the nvidia denoiser. This is with the default VRay 5 glass preset material. (The glass settings as they came in from Next initially had worse artifacts when rendered in V5, so it was changed to the V5 preset.) The glass has thickness, not just a plane. RGB is comparable between the two but the denoiser is not.

Note the blotchy area in the corner of the mullion. Also more noise in general behind the glass. I'm seeing those kinds of artifacts in numerous areas. Image was saved after ~ 5 minutes of GPU rendering (2080Ti.) Similar artifacts w/CPU rendering.

I'm far from an expert; just wanted to throw this out and see if it looks familiar and/or if I'm missing something. Can provide more detail if needed. If I need to tweak some materials between versions that's fine, but it would be nice to get the same or better results without too much adjustment. The Next rendering was adequate to show to the client, but the blotchy areas in the glass with V5 won't cut it.

    Hi rifkin

Thanks for the info. Do you get such results if you switch to V-Ray Denoiser or Intel Open Image?

Would it be possible to forward us a stripped version of this scene with the issue reproducible so we can investigate? You can do so via our contact form, just make sure to mention this thread in the email, thanks.

Those don't show the artifacting. I had never changed from the default before, one of those should work for this purpose at least. I'll try to get a project bundled and sent in a few days. Thanks!

Thanks, rifkin - we'll be expecting the files; Can you also make sure to update your GPU drivers to the latest recommended ones?

waaazoo - any sample scenes from you would be also greatly appreciated.

Looks like recommended is 461.09, I was 461.40. Tried going back to 461.09 and updating to 461.72, no change with either. fwiw it does mostly resolve if I let it run for 20+ minutes.

I didn't specify it's with Maya Vray5 and it was not specifically with GPU. After some more tests, I think it's happening only in IPR rendering, but as soon as I make a final render, these kind of artifacts disappear (CPU rendering).

I zipped and sent a file. I just happened to try this on another system with the same hardware, clean install of Max 2021 and VRay 5, update 1, but older drivers - 442.92 - and did not get the artifacts. I updated that system to 461.40, and then to the most recent 461.92, and I'm seeing the artifacts with both of those drivers.
