  • Lens effects comping issues

I am battling with lens effects on a project. The glare element is just not representative of the lens effects in the vfb.
In one post, or the docs, I don't remember which....it says that the lens effects glare element is output at an intensity of 1.0.
Why is this? It does not make sense to me to set the lens effects so they look great in the vfb, only to have them saved as an element which barely shows up when
    composited?
What is the correct workflow to have them look like they are supposed to.
I should add that this is an animation which I will not be comping, so my client needs the simplest approach to do this please.

it should be basic add operation with the multiplier you need.
"barely shows up" does not sound right.
what is the intensity and threshold in the VFB?

Yeah I must be missing something...not sure what.
What do you mean by multiplier in this case?
I use AE so I thought it was simply an add layer, which unfortunately does not work.
Here is the result...rgb left and AE comp right.
      Lens fx intensity is 80

you need the same 80 times „more” in AE.

Sorry I don't understand....do you mean a specific AE effect, if so, which?

bloom/glare pass should be 80 times brighter. curves, exposure etc.

Ah ok, no that doesn't work I'm afraid. All that does is blow everything out. All the subtle streaks are gone.
All the bloom is no longer a soft edged mix with the background.

I'm outputting exr so I would have thought all that info would already be there without the need to overexpose stuff.

you are multiplying bloom/glare by 80 in the VFB. same needs to happen in comp.
lens effects are set up to work with light intensities closer to real world I guess so your other option is making lights stronger and intensity multiplier in lens fx on 1.0

                  Oh dear...
                  I hadn't changed the comp to 32bpc...oops
In my defence, I haven't used Vray for animation for quite a while, so clearly forgot some basic checks.

Many thanks in any case...if you hadn't replied I wouldn't have brainstromed it to work

I use Fusion for animation previews. simple and super fast.

My client uses AE, so I needed a reliable and simple workflow for him to use to edit the eventual footage.
He's too old to change now
Of course I am older too, though I insist on stressing myself with new stuff constantly...all good fun

I'll need to take another look at Fusion...
