  • V-Ray Hang/Computer freeze - Rendering Animation

    Hi all,

I'm currently trying render out an animation for a client and I'm getting consistent hangs/computer completely freezing. The computer is completely unresponsive and I have to hard restart using the power button.
Sometimes it'll be after 10 frames, sometimes after 500 frames.

    So far I've tried:
    • Reducing thread count using ENV variable: VRAY_NUM_THREADS
    • Reducing thread count using .cmd file: set /a VRAY_NUM_THREADS=%NUMBER_OF_PROCESSORS%-1 cd %ADSK_3DSMAX_x64_2022% 3dsmax.exe
    • Changing computer power settings (currently set to balanced)
    • Disabled hard disk powering down
    • Disabled sleep/hibernate for computer and screen
    • Lowered priority in task manager
    • USB selective suspending disabled
    • Set my maximum processer state to 95%

    Specs:

    V-Ray 5 - Update 1.2
    3DS Max 2022
    Windows 10
    AMD Threadripper 3990x
    Nvidia 3090
    128gb ram

Scene file - I can't attach this due to NDA
Dump file - I don't seem to have a dump file, but I have powered my computer on and off since the last crash. I'll be rendering tonight, so if it crashes again, I'll get it then.

Hope someone can help/also having this issue. Deadline is looming and this has pushed me back considerably.

    Cheers!

It sounds like you're running out of RAM and swapping to disk (which will bring the workstation to a halt.).
That process is generally then bound to fail if a disk fills up with swapfile, which will likely crash the OS.

See if this guide has anything worth your time in it, it could make quite the difference, albeit it'll take some time for you to prepare.

Thanks for the quick response Lele! Appreciate it.

I will check RAM usage as that's something I've not looked at yet. Can't see it hitting 128gb though.
The scene is a single product being animated with no displacement. It is CAD data but I'm using the viewport settings at render time for the geometry approximation.

I'll give it another render shortly and check.
