Slate Material Editor Previews not showing

HI, I'm have a problem where the slate material editor in 3ds max 2022.2 (and 2022.1) wont show a preview of the material unless I manually update it after every change. (auto-update previews is turned on)
This happens for every material and map type. Switching to the native material preview has the same problem.

Oddly though, the compact material editor works fine?

I have done a clean install of Max and vray but the problem persists.

Any ideas what I've done?

Well.....for anyone else who has done this.

In the SME, Options > Enable Global Rendering

Must have had that disabled by accident
