  • Substance2 - lag and delay for everything

    Hi everyone,
is there anyway to convert easily substance2 node to vray bitmap?

I don't remember to have this kind of problem with vray 5.1, but now with the latest, everytime I try to do something such as opening the file/pick the material/move the viewport/start a render, it takes literally 5-10 minutes before the pc/3ds max gets back responsive.

I deleted all the substance2 materials and works just fine, but I'd need the materials

Other users have also reported this before, however, I have never managed to reproduce it. Which 3ds Max and Substance plugin version do you have installed? Have you tried converting the Substance2 node to Arnold to see if the slowdown is linked to V-Ray specifically? Does it happen with every Substance2 node or only with a specific .sbsar? How many Substance2 nodes are there in the scene? Do you mind sending the scene via the contact form?

      Thanks for your reply,
in order, I'm using 3ds max 2022 with latest version of vray, substance 2.4.4
I never tried with arnold because I never used it, but I can try to see if it happened something.
I'd say it happens everytime I used a substance material, any and not 1 in particular.
It happened with a file previously, with only one material applied, on this one I'm working on I have 3-4 right now.
But I don't recall it was so laggy previously.

I did a quick try, and it crash as soon I converted the material to vray.
I'll send the scene, just the time to collect the project(I won't load Phoenix cache).

here only to show you the behavior I have, I stopped at some point because I had enough of waiting, but if you have time to see...you will get my point

      I'll send the file soon

      EDIT:
If you need any additional info about my system or anything else please let me know.
Also if you have any tips to try to fix the problem, would be much appreciated

I am still unable to reproduce the issue (using the same software versions). Have you installed the 3ds Max 2022.2 update? Is V-Ray set as your Material Editor renderer (Render Setup>Common>Assign Renderer)? If it happens only with a single .sbsar, maybe you could attach it here, so we can be sure it's not caused by a specific file? Also, some users seem to have bypassed the slowdowns/crashing by disabling the rendering in the ME (teapot at the bottom-left corner of the SME); you may try it out.

          Hi Aleksandar,
          yep, max 2022.2.
          I didn't do the common>assign>renderer.
I did only choose the render from the top menu (next to the render button let's say).
I don't know if in term of software means something different for vray or not, but tomorrow I'll try that way tooz not with the pc right now.

It happens with any sbsar in general, not a specific one unfortunately.
I'll try to disable the render preview in the ME too.
I'll give you also some additional details about drivers installed, just in case.

Also, if you need/want to try something out on my machine, just let me know.

Okay, make a list of your PC's components - it may be related to a specific build.

By the way, which engine is selected in the Substance Settings (I cannot tell from the video)? CPU or GPU?

in the video was GPU, default settings.
I tried cpu as well though this morning.

I tried to switch off the SE rendering preview but didn't help.

If you haven't already, I would highly recommend updating the substance plugin from the official adobe(substance3D) website.
The built-in is used to be dated and causing all kind of problems.
Also, as alternative , if you are working with heavy substance shaders you can use the free substance player to convert those to standard textures that you can plug manually /using scripts into vray bitmap to use in Max.
                    -------------------------------------------------------------
Simply, I love to put pixels together! Sounds easy right : ))

I was having this issue with 3ds max 2024 and 2025 on windows 10. Just upgraded to windows 11 and tested in 3ds max 2025 the issue seems to be resolved.
