  • target distance vray camera and vray lights

hello. i'm in max 2021 and since v5, i've noticed that when i create a vray light, the target distance is available for me to type in or use up/down spinner when the targeted check-box is un-checked. however when the targeted check-box is checked, then the distance is greyed out and i cannot change it. is that correct behavior?

also, the same thing happens when i create a vray physical camera. if targeted is checked, then i cannot set the target distance via the spinners or text-box.

It is correct, yes, if somewhat convoluted: when the target object is present, then you set its position, and distance from source, in the viewport.
When it's not present, you have to manually define where the "virtual" target is, as that normally still defines focus distance, or for lights directional/cone preview size.
Focus distance on cameras can further be overridden, independently from the presence of a target node, but that requires a further checkbox.
