  • Infinite Mirror Reflection

Hey there. I have a bathroom with two mirrors opposite side - rendering for spherical panorama.

Is there a limit to how far those reflections get traced?

How can I get rid of that black box? It's visible on both sides (mirrors)

    Thanks -T

The black box is the tracing limit (amount of bounces) of the reflection ray. You can control the amount through the Mirror shader's reflection Max Depth parameter. Note that this will increase the number of calculations as well, hence yielding slower render times. I don't think you can remove the exit color (black box) entirely since that would require an infinite amount of bounces. You can shrink it, though.

The only problem with that is that it needs a very large max depth to shrink it to small enough not to be noticeable.
In my very quick test with only 2 mirrors in an empty scene I used 150 bounces and it rendered, although with a perfect reflection...any glossiness and it insta-crashes.
Lucky for you you can easily fake the effect with a little comped crop...saves any headaches

I usually rise the ray depth a bit, then like fixeighted I comp a crop when needed.

Also, ensure the reflection color isn't pure white.
Besides being more physically plausible (infinite mirrors always darken with each recursion), it will also help greatly with convergence, and in avoiding fireflies.
