  • USD loaded as v-ray scene no animation in viewport

    Hi,
A usd that's loaded with as a vray scene does not seem to update when scrubbing the timeline.
Is this a limitation? Are we going to be able to view animation inside the viewport at some point?

We are more or less dependent on Autodesk for this. We need to hook on the native USD importer in Max and this will happen as soon as AD are ready with the USD API for 3rd party renderers.
If it was that easy, it would have already been done

Fantastic, looking forward to see how far the native USD support is going to go.

Can you share a little bit of your workflow and what are you hoping to achieve with USD?

Right now we're getting some data from Houdini, so being able to transfer light(flexible) caches is a goal for us.

The layered structure in USD seems to be a good fit for this. Looking at features like instancing, usdskel, variants and layer overrides.
USD seems to bring new and bright workflows in that regard. So it seems to be a better fit as a interchange format than vray scene/proxy.

I've been using alembics and using the vray instancer inside 3ds to solve some more complex problems, and its working alright but would be nice if we were able author usd files that's ready to render.

I'm a little skeptical on the fully-featured authoring part after import, but we'll see what can be done. As a start it will be really useful if we know what are the must-have features related to the USD workflow.

btw I've somehow mixed your two threads by mistake (I've had them both open ), so actually my first post here was for this thread - https://forums.chaos.com/forum/v-ray...ing-inside-3ds

I'll check what's going on with the animation support in viewport and write back.
