  • Possible VFB Bug

    Can anyone else confirm this:

Create a simple scene (sphere floating in blank space).

Render a frame and view in VFB.

Add a Background in the VFB. Set to NOT save in image (the default). I am using <frameNum> to load a sequence...

Add another Background in the VFB. Load an image sequence (using <frameNum>) with an alpha and set this to Foreground mode, but still NOT save in image.

Set the scene to save as exr.

Now save and render the scene (in our case this is via 3dsmaxcmd.exe).

The rendered result ends up mainly black (except the antialised edges interestingly enough).

If you turn off the background layers in the VFB before render it works fine. Leave the VFB background layers on (which is a waste of loading the image during net rendering of course) and the source renders as pretty much black.

    Max 2021 VRay 5 build 31158

Hi I tested the background layer a bit and found out that every time you leave the checkbox "save in image" off with the background layer on, you get black background in your render output. I will look into this and get back to you.

Hi I logged the issue from my previous post under VMAX-11891 for developer review. To me it seems that you actually hit it but in a more complex setup.

        That’s for looking into this.

Note that in my case the RGB portion of the image was black (except on the antialiased edges). The alpha channel was correct.

I don’t know if this is the same issue or not.

Might be nice if it could auto-detect a net render and turn off all background layers that are not marked save in image so that those background images are not loaded from disk when net rendering. Still allow the user to turn them back on during a render if they need to check something, but default to turning them off when net rendering.
