  • V-Ray seriously slows down 3Ds Max and I have tried everything to fix it

Whenever I try to do anything with V-Ray in 3Ds Max it takes several minutes for the action to happen. Anything from selecting the renderer in render settings to adding a V-Ray light. When I have another renderer activated, like Arnold, there is no lag at all and 3Ds Max works fine.
I have tried everything I can think of. I have reinstalled 3Ds Max, reinstalled V-ray, deleted ALL V-ray and Chaos files and reinstalled, deleted ALL Autodesk files and reinstalled, restared my computer. Literally everything I can think of. Nothing works.
Does anyone have any idea how I can fix this, or a guide to a clean uninstall of V-ray?

Just a thought but it may be an issue with checking the license.

Hi is this happening even in a new empty scene? What versions of 3ds max and V-Ray are you using?

Hi, yes it happens with a completely new and empty scene. I'm using an updated 3Ds Max 2023 and the newest version og V-Ray 2023. I have no idea what to do

We had the same issue since introduction of Cosmos. For some reason on some workstations it's slow, very slow. 3ds Max hangs for seconds at every operation.

What I found that helps is removing the Cosmos plugin from 3ds Max installation: galaxyimporter2021.gup

          Check this out.

          Best,
          Tomasz

Thank you for the response, but this didn't help either... 3Ds Max is still as laggy, I just waited three minutes for the render settings window to open

Using the standard uninstall ought to take care of anything that may interfere with Max.
It will leave stuff like the material library behind, but that makes sense, and shouldn't have a bearing on the issue.

It doesn't look likely it's us, not even if the license server was being obnoxious.
Speaking of which, make sure to update to this one.
It looks like something is guru-meditating, slaying core0, which also impairs our functionality.
Doing quick tests with maxscript, on a well plugin-bloated max 2022 with Corona, Arnold and V-Ray coexisting, among other things, i get around 2 seconds (+-5%) opening the render dialog, and that goes up to 2.8 for a fresh max 2023 (but my build isn't a release one, so excuse the difference.).
Below, the max 2022 and max 2023 measured times (there is also a values commit operation to take into account, added so to ensure the redraw has been completed. RL times may be slightly lower.).
