  • Displacement on objects with no displacement mod

Can Anyone explain to me why I still see displacement on objects with no displacement modifier when max's displacement is turned off? The texture is piped in via material (as I'm using it on Proxys) but

Logic would say that where displacemtns not needed I can just leave off the VrayDisplacement Mod and none would occur, but it's behaving as if the default Max displacment is turned on still.

The fox seems to be to put a mod on even when displacement isn't required, but I worry about what effect this will have on render time...

Edit: I was using a colour value of 0.5 on ALL sub materials, even the ones I didn't want to be displaced. For some reason max still displaces these (I guess by 0.5 x 1 world unit) even if max global displacment is turned off!

Putting a Vray displacment mod (+/-10mm) on everything does sort the problem 0.5 grey =0mm but it does take a long time to work through those at render start.

Removing the texture and Vray mod from items that don't need displament seems to be the best

Ok, so maybe someone can clarify on this, but here's a summary of the issue:

Here I have a stool a chair and a table, all with the same multi-sub material.

Max native displacement iS OFF, Vray Displacment is ON.

The stool and the chair are both are Vray Proxies, only the stool has a VrayDisplamentMod on top with the useMtl option enabled and value of 10mm with -5mm offset.

In order to keep the submaterials other than the fabric un-displaced I've piped a texture colour value of 0.5 grey in to the displament texture slot - all works fine so far.

BUT the table (left) is behaving as if max native displacement is turned on! Only the proxies are behaving as I expect (i.e. no displament without Vray Displament Mod)

Have I just got the wrong end of the stick about how this works here?

Max help says: Note: You can disable displacement globally by turning off Displacement in the Options group on the Common Parameters rollout.

So what I've done should work?

I replied to your FB post as well. I forgot about the option to Override Max's displacement (Rendersettings > Settings > Default Displacement). Set this to Off if you want them seperate.
