  • Black cryptomatte exr, even when VFB displays it correctly

    Hey!

Tried rendering 400 frames of an animation today with additional cryptomatte element with material name method, but ran into a problem regarding it's output. So, whenever I render stuff in VFB, it properly 'calculates' and displays the cryptomatte pass which is great, but whenever I try to save it (from VFB/regular render from Render settings) to a multi-layered EXR, it never happens to work - it separates into 4 different channels (VrayCryptomatte, VrayCryptomatte00, VrayCryptomatte01, VrayCryptomatte02), and just one of them have any information - which is basically some weird outline around random object, the rest of it/them is pitch black.

    What I already tried doing:

    - thought my scene is broken -> fresh scene with simple geo setup - doesn't work
    - regular rendering 'pipeline' > adding Render elements, pressing Render > it always renders just the beauty pass in the .exr file, without any additional pass,
    - saving straight from VFB (and even if it worked it wouldn't pass for me, I need 400 frames) > Cryptomatte shows up perfect in VFB > after saving into a separate file from VFB is pitch black in AE
    - saving Vray Raw image file exr > that one contains the passes (opposite to Common tab > Save file from Max - that one saves just the beauty channel, never contains anything else) but the cryptomatte is again broken
    - adding VrayOptionRE element with EXR multipart ticked on, doesn't work either

Sadly cannot show the whole frame, but here is the same fragment:

Do you guys have any idea what could be happening? I am using latest build.

    Cheers and thank you,
    Filip

Just got a message from a guy on Facebook group, turns out Extractor is having issues interpreting cryptomatte layer and I should be using a native AE's Cryptomatte effect to read it.... feeling completely stupid right now

Yeah, CM ought to show up as a single layer in your post application, otherwise it's not usable.
      Glad you found a fix!
