  • VRayDistanceTex as XRef makes 3ds Max crash

    Hello everyone,

I'm using VRayDistanceTex as a way to create lines on a road. Said road will then be loaded into a scene as an XRef Object. However, using the distance texture makes 3ds Max crash when either loading the scene or interacting with the XRef entry in the asset tracking menu (like making the path to the XRef absolute or relative to the project folder).

The crash caused is a Stack Overflow which then 3ds Max suppresses due to the number of warnings exceeding the maximum allowed limit, and 3ds Max closes. I've tried to reset Max to factory default and progressively removed things from the road (I was also using Chaos Scatter and Cosmos materials), and I tracked down the problem to VRayDistanceTex.

This doesn't happen when the road is used as an XRef Scene, but I prefer to use XRef Objects as I can delete stuff not framed by the camera and have a more refined control over other things. Of course I'd like to keep the road as a reference to avoid bloating the scenes too much.

    3ds Max is 2022.3.6 Security Fix and V-ray is 6 hotfix 3.

Has anyone encountered this problem and found a solution?

I tried to reproduce this, and was not able to.
Would you be so kind as to send the master scene stripped to just the nodes and shaders causing the crash to Support, mentioning this thread?

I submitted the ticket as you suggested (a bit late, but I was on vacation last week :P) and already got a reply from the devs: this is a known issue that will resolved in the future. Hopefully sooner than later
