  • vray mesh export crashes

Hello, happened recently, when I try to export object to proxy alongside with the change of the exporting path the 3dsmax crashes. Not every time, best way to experience the problem is to spent some time switching/clicking in the menu, sometimes crashes even without hiting the OK button. Happens even in the blank scene with a box. If I keep the default path all is ok.

When Max crashes it creates a crash dump 3dsmax_minidump.dmp in your temp folder. Could you attach it here? Make sure it's a recent one (preferably after a reproduction).

It was easy to reproduce the crash again, tried more times for sure, but the 3dsmax_minidump.dmp did not update the time, it keeps yesterdays time. anyway find attached.

Thanks for the provided file. The crash may be due to running out of memory. Could you attach the scene with the mesh so we can test it out? Also, how much RAM do you have installed on your workstation?

Hi Aleksandar, I had 128gb ram and the scene was empty with a box and then a sphere only. Max 2023 latest, vray one from the latest 6.1 stable nightlies. Nvidia 528.24. .......But my windows 11 updated today and I updated the nVidia driver to the most recent one as well (I know it is not recommended). Tried to replicate the problem again and nothing happened... Really strange...

I have the same issue since vray6 and noticed that the crash appears from the moment I select a network path in the vray mesh export dialog.
There is no crash dump file since max just disappears (crash to desktop).
Weird thing is its not always happening.
I create quite a lot of proxies and it never happened in previous vray versions.

The only solution i found is saving the proxy to a local path and copy the proxy file afterwards to the correct place on the mesh server and manually changing the file path.
But i also noticed that after creating a first proxy successfully locally and then try to create (from another scene) a new proxy over the network it suddenly is working.

I have a feeling, maybe, that windows firewall or defender may be the cause of all of this.

Happened to me with local path as well and still happens sometimes, only workaround that helps here is using the default path and as you say copy/relink the files later.

Did some more tests while creating proxies of trees.
                  Turned firewall and anti-virus off.
And indeed, the exporter can also crash max just by clicking around in it.
I also just created a proxy over the network successfully and then immediately after the save max crashed.
The exporter is just randomly working/crashing.

                  Workstation is an amd threadripper 2990WX 32/64threads - 64Gb

And did some more tests, since i have to create a lot of new proxies the coming days.
                    Its definitely the network path.
As long the file path (over network) isnt longer than 4 folders deep, everything is fine.
From the moment i select the 5 folder, 1 cpu core goes 100% and then after 2 or 3 seconds crash to desktop.

Thats why i thought i could click randomly and it will crash, because of the 2-3 seconds.
This was wrong, the cpu always goes 100% and then crash AFTER selecting the path in the file browser.

The weird thing, sometimes i can save directly in too deeper paths.
I remember there is a max length allowed for paths+filenames in windows, maybe this has anything to do with?
For now i'll just save in a less deep file path.

Cheers and sorry for the long txt's.

Sorry for the late reply. That's surely the issue. I tested it on a simple scene by naming it with a very very long name and it does crash. From what I see on the web the Windows path name limit is 260 characters.

Strange is that in my case the path I want to set is usually like "y:\3d\a-trees\proxies" or "y:\3d\a-plants\proxies" and the default path is set to "Y:\work" so maybe it is the "-" character inside the path specification?!
No mapped network drive, all is on the local disk.

I dont use special characters in my path and file names, also no "-" character.
The path+filename length here is around 120 characters, quite far under the max length allowed or supported by windows.
Also loading the proxies from these long file paths into a scene is working fine without any problems.

Maybe something else is happening. Could you attach the file called 3dsmax_minidump.dmp in your temp folder (type %temp% in windows explorer address bar), which should be created after the crash? Make sure it's a recent one (directly after the crash).

Hi Hermit, tried again, max 2023 all was ok, max 2024 after one minute crashed even without pressing the "ok" button, no minidump created. Export path was "y:\3d\a-trees\proxies\a-ggg". I will PM you the wetransfer link to the 3dsmax2023 file archive. Vray 6 Update (1.1 6.10.07 build 3205 GPU mode. 7950x, 128gb ram, win11, 2x rtx4090 1x rtx3090, driver 531.61 type DCH. Thanks!
