  • IPR crashes with IPR Debug Shading toggled

Hello! IPR consistently crashes when IPR debug is toggled on, test on a couple of different workstations. Steps to reproduce:

    1) Empty scene, create any primitive, create any vray light.
    2) Open VFB and start IPR.
    3) Turn on IPR Debug Shading.
    4) Stop IPR.
    5) Start IPR again with debug shading toggled (icon depressed)
    6) Crash.

    We're using 3ds max 2023.3 + VRay 6 Update 1 (61004).

Let me know what other info you need, thank you!

e: If anyone encounters this and needs a fix, hide all lights (turn off render hidden, too) and start IPR to toggle off IPR debug. It only crashes with lights on.

HI, thanks for posting. this is not happening on my end. Could you try uninstalling your V-Ray and installing the latest version.

Thank you for the swift response!

We uninstalled and reinstalled the version you linked above, rebooted. The issue persists. However, we found that it doesn't crash 100% of the time. For some reason, it consistently crashes with a Plane object and Plane vray light. Can you try different primitives and maybe more than 1 light? This is occurring on 3 machines here.

Hi, could you upload your test scene? You can do that here or use our support contact form. If you choose the contact form please include a link to this thread in your e-mail.

Done! Also adding this note that I sent through contact, for visibility:

When I reproduce the steps in a new Max session, it will crash. If I save the scene before starting IPR, close max, open saved scene, it will start IPR correctly without crash (as expected). If I add a new light, it crashes again.

          Super weird!

            Hi,
On my 3ds Max 2023 with latest V-Ray 6 update 1 the issue is not reproducing.
Have you tried reinstalling your 3ds Max? You could also send us the dump file that 3ds Max creates when it crashes. Please could you reproduce the issue once again and look for the dump and log file in your temp folder ( type %temp% in the file explorer ) and send us the newest 3dsmax_minidump.dmp and VRayLog.txt

If none of the above works please lets meet through team viewer. Please find the details about this on the ticket.

Hi, there is indeed a crash with V-Ray 6 but it is not reproducing on every workstation.
Mine does not crash but after looking into your dump we tested on several different workstations here and some of them crash and others do not with no obvious reason so far.
Thank you very much for the report and the cooperation, we really appreciate it.
The issue is logged under VMAX-13183.
