animated lights not rendering

Any reason why a VRayLight and VRayAmbientLight with their multipliers animated from 0 might not render?
I can see the multipliers being animated in the interface but there's no illumination in either the interactive VFB or in an output sequence.

Auto-exposure will negate the animated values, which is the only cause I found for this.

I deleted the lights, merged the data into a different file, added new lights and they work.
Still don't know what was causing it.
