  • multisubtex "by face id" not working or i don't understand it fully?

i created a sphere with whatever number of sides. i added a multisubtex to a vray material diffuse set it to random and then checked the box for "by face id". no individual faces on the sphere changed to random colors (i have 6 of them).

it works if i create multiple elements however. but not faces.

    any thoughts?
    thanks,
ps - GPU and CPU gives same result.

Have a look here. It explains the modes pretty well.

    https://docs.chaos.com/display/VMAX/VRayMultiSubTex

By face ID – Assigns random colors based on material IDs of the object's faces.

Yo can set the multisubtex with as many textures as you like in it, but you have to assign id's to polygons - individually or elements. so add edit poly to your object (if it's not one already), select polys or elements, assign them ID numbers.. often helpas to set all polys to your main texture first, then pick others to change
I often have a single multitex for almost a whole scene, so I can easily replace a surface on everything using it in the scene.

"By face ID – Assigns random colors based on material IDs of the object's faces." i missed the "material IDs" part.

i thought face ID = polygon ID. like when you select a poly it says "Polygon 3 selected" or "Polygon 86 selected". i thought by face ID was separate from material ID or it was optional.

so "Polygon 3" is not a face id.

You are right that face ID is a misnomer, because, as you point out, there do exist face IDs. However, the docs say, "based on material IDs of the object's faces."

"By Face ID" should probably be renamed "By Face MatID" to disambiguate. And I get confused by this every time as well, and that is why I always end up going to the docs.

FYI, I'll make a note to the devs to rename the option.
