  • Three times is a charm

I have these scenes that crash, for no reason (that I can find). It is always the same client, but I started each project from scratch. The scenes are large, but so are many of my other projects that render without an issue. The only thing I can think of is, I use Railclone in these scenes that crash. I use Railclone in other projects, but in these, I use a lot of them. The odd thing is I can render 4K, with displacement, DOF, MB, with all default, on a few cameras without an issue. The next camera will crash sometimes in LC and sometimes when renderings. I can decrease resolution, turn off displacements, lower settings, and it'll crash. I'll go back to the good camera views, and it'll crash. Ok, here is the kicker, after three MAX reboots, it'll successfully render. The next camera will crash, three MAX reboots, and it'll render. I have been trying to render out seven views today. 12-hours later, I am only on my third view; spending my day troubleshooting. Not until now do I realize settings don't matter, I just have to let MAX crash three times. What is going on here?

Hard to say definitively what might cause it but it all points to Railclone, so you should try copying the scene and collapsing all the Railclones.
I'd guess that will solve the issue and if it doesn't then you know it's some other cause.

Nope, collapsing RC didn’t work. Three MAX crashes still is the workaround.

The logs give no clue. Windows Event Viewer is Volume Shadow Copy Service error, which I need to look into, but I don't know if it is related.

I am not sure I understand.... Windows Even Viewer is a built in Windows app. In search, type in Event Viewer.

Are you using any shaders from the Vray material Library browser? Ive found today that some concretes are crashing my scenes when I use them.

Yes, I am. I'll look into this, to see if it is the issue.

I dont use them in production, but I tried using a concrete floor as I was look deving a car wheel asset. My scene went from stable to crashy instantly.
