I just noticed this, using Max 24 and 6.10.06.
As you lower the glossiness then the closer to 0 it gets then the lighter the
viewport representation is, eventually making it almost white.
This happens in all viewports, with the top/front/back/left/right getting brighter more rapidly than ortho/persp/camera.
