  • BUG: Normal Maps are not rendered properly

As you can see in the comparison image, Vray renders the normal map wrong. It's not a green channel flip issue or wrong gamma. My guess is that there's something fishy with the bi-tangents... As you can see, painter, arnold and cycles all render it as it should be. This happens both in vray 5 and Vray 6 . The sample scenes are Vray 6 update 1.2 in 3dsmax 2023.

Yep, I tried all sorts of things, but I couldn't get it any better. There's definitely something going on outside of what I can test.

It's a known issue (internal bug-tracker id: VMAX-12805) occurring when rendering baked normal maps in 3ds Max. Rendering the scene in STD (V-Ray>.vrscene exporter > Export and Render) should resolve the issue.

EDIT: It actually may be a different issue. I'll write back with more info.

Rendering in standalone is not a workaround for lots of reasons. We tried to use standalone years ago and had more issues than is worth counting (yes, we were in contact with developers). Is there an ETA for a fix?

hermit.crab Has there been any momentum on that issue?

The issue should be fixed in the latest internal nightlies.

Is there any ETA on official stable release, as I don't want to install nightlies on all my workstations.
                  A.

Can't give an exact estimate, but it should happen before the end of the year.

Is this mean nightlies build got problem?

Not necessarily, I just don't want to install nightlies on all workstations
