  • 3dsmax zoom extents limits

    Hi there,

I need some help when working on big masterplan sites, like 5km x 5km or bigger areas:

It seems you can only zoom out to a certain point when in plan/side views, then you have to pan to side of site. In perspective you can zoom extents and even further if necessary.
Problem is that objects move by big increments when using the mouse when in perspective view.

Is there a solution to this, or a setting that can be changed?

System and Display Units = mm
    Grid Spacing = 10mm

Prefer to work in mm as we link in Revit files that's also in mm.

    Snaps are turned off.

    Please advise, thanks!

For masterplans that big the systemunit size should be set to either meters or kilometers, centimers will also still work, but mm you will have the issue you described as well as other issues (accuracy, etc).

I used to do masterplans of around 2-3 km in centimeters before switching to meters, so that should be fine.

Doesn't Max handle the conversion properly when linking the Revit files?
    A.

Incidentally, I found that the viewport does have a max limit.

When I was doing an Earth zoom, intitially I had the Earth at a gargantuan scale in order to have it fit the land mass I was zooming out from, Monument Valley, which just happened to be real world scale.
Only after setting it up did I realise it's impossible to zoom out to then see the sphere. I caught it in time to scale everthing down a little

Anyway, if it helps then you can use ctrl + Alt and move the mouse to zoom also, which is useful
