  • VRayCryptomatte types not visible in the VFB Layers Mask

Hello, I have a render and created 3 separate Render Elements for VRayCryptomatte with 1 ID type set to node, 1 set to Node material name, and 1 set to Layer name. When rendering, I can see and change the visible element from the top left drop down menu and see that the 3 separate render elements are in fact rendered. When compositing via the layers, I am attempting to add a Cryptomatte mask but am only able to select node from the type of Cryptomatte render element. I do not see material and Layer name.

I tried saving the .vrimg to a single file and open in a new blank 3ds max scene with no luck seeing the Cryptomatte types in the VFB mask layers.

I am on VRay 6.20.02 on 3ds max 2024. Rendered in GPU. I can provide the .vrimg file if needed.

Additional findings: In my original render, I rendered with Distributed rendering using my local pc (2x GPUs) + render node (1x GPU) and was unable to see the mask types. When switching off Distributed rendering, I am able to see the mask types. Is this a limitation of Crypomatte across Distributed nodes in GPU?

Local GPUs are RTX 6000 Ada
Distributed GPU is RTX 6000 (non-Ada generation).

edit: nevermind, didn't read the distributed rendering remark.

I do not think that user is experience the same issue as me. I am not crashing during rendering with this issue.

Yeah indeed, my first answer was when I'm having problems not seeing them it's mostly related to having an object or material with a = or ; in the name, but seeing as the issue is resolved when you disable distributed I don't see any connection there either.

Further investigation I'm finding that the .vrimg file saved with only the Cryptomatte Node present is significantly smaller in file size than the .vrimg file saved with all Cryptomatte Nodes present. (1.7 gb vs 2.6 gb)

Hey anthony_billet this is a known bug that in V-Ray GPU and DR only the top Cryptomatte Render element can be used. It's logged in out bug-tracking system as VMAX-13848.
