  • VRayVolumeGrid colors mismatch between old and new settings versions.

I am having a problem with PhoenixFD and VRayVolumeGrid smoke colors in new versions of PhoenixFD (v5.22) or VRay (v6.20.06). When I make PhoenixFD settings from scratch the smoke colors look washed out. When I load volumetric render presets from older setups then colors are fine and look more contrast between lit/shadows. Even if I load render preset and reset all settings to defaults there is still difference in colors. It looks like new color settings do not apply full color range. I still use 3ds Max 2024 and Gamma 2.2 workflow. Can someone give me a clue what the difference is between two render presets (color_bad.tpr and color_good.tpr)? I provide .max scene file for 3ds Max 2024 with the VRayVolumeGrid and two render settings.

The difference stems from the "brdfscatter" parameter (hidden in the UI), which value was changed (used to be 1, now it's 0,25) in recent versions and the new results are, in fact, the correct ones. If you multiply the current lighting by 4, you'll notice the smoke results will be similar to the old. In other words, to get the old results you should increase the lighting affecting the smoke. Alternatively, you may manually revert to the old setting via the preset.

Thank you for explanation. I just want to say that I don't like this change because smoke lighting with this update is completely off. I have to increase diffuse multiplier in volumetric render options if I create render settings from scratch. Otherwise smoke looks washed out.
