  • Vray6 IPR crashing in Max2023 on any scene

    Hi there,

I am using 3DsMax 2023 (latest buid 2023.3.6) with the latest Vray 6 build.
I am on a Windows 11 machine, did install the latest Nvidia dirvers and am using a geforece 4090 graphics card.

I am getting constant crashes when trying to render (any scene that uses Vray) IPR in the frame buffer window or in the viewport window when using Vray CPU. (using Vray GPU on same scenes everything IPR works fine).
On all the crashes I am getting the following error code(s):

    Datum/Uhrzeit: 2024-09-19 12:19:26 +02:00
    Anwendung: 3dsmax.exe
Fehler: Access violation - code c0000005 (first/second chance not available)
    Name des abgestürzten Moduls: vrender2023.dlr
    Ausnahmeadresse: 0x00007ff9e9fd3b7a
    Ausnahmecode: c0000005

(german language version of 3dsMax , this is why the error mesages are in german).

Also when using Phonix FD I am getting same crashes in IPR and then it does state the phoenix.dll when looking into the error codes:

    Anwendung: 3dsmax.exe
Fehler: Access violation - code c0000005 (first/second chance not available)
    Name des abgestürzten Moduls: phoenixfd_vray.dll
    Ausnahmeadresse: 0x00007ff9e6ee8dab
    Ausnahmecode: c0000005

Any help appreciated - tried to reinstall Vray and Phonix FD components - no difference.

    Thanks,
    Martin

I did the BIOS update (13900 intel microcode issue...); and all my problems with vray6 as well as phoenix FD simulationg are gone. No more crashes!

Hi, thanks for posting. Could you share the model of your CPU? Do you have issues in other applications like for example other render engines or games? Please try to uninstall V-Ray and PhoenixFD and install only V-Ray for a test.
Do you have these issues only with the latest V-Ray version? Is it a new computer, have you used IPR on it before and have you had issues?

          Hello Vladimir,

will uninstall Phoneix FD and sese if issues with Vray continue or not.
I am (parallel) still using 3DsMax 2022 with Vray 6 and latest Phoneix FD for3DsMax2022 and am not having any CPU IPR issues withhin 3Dsmax 2022.

          Best,
          Martin

I did uninstall Vray and Phonix, and then only did install Vray 6: no more crashes.

Hi, we've had a lot of complaints from clients using 13th and 14th generation Intel processors. There is a lot of info on the web about issues with these processors under continuous load. Please check this possibility as well since it is highly likely. Here is one article about the issue but there is information from many places about the issue even from Intel themselves found here.

I am going to investigate the intel processor issue.

But please also have a look on this error code - that is waht i typically get when phonix FD crashes (whilst simulation). Do you think this also is related to the Intel processor issue?

I had issues with 13900 series.

Updating the BIOS - in my case ASUS, resolved any issues with using CPU under load rendering/simulation etc.
