  • VRAY 7 ACEScg Issue

These two renders between Vray 6 and 7 are drastically different. I am using the colour management settings inside of 3D Max for both images, and all my textures are set to the correct colour spaces. I might be misinterpreting something with the new update, and any help sorting this out would be greatly appreciated.

Mind if you strip down the scene and attach/send it along with a screencap of your Color Management settings?

Thanks for the provided scene. Based on my tests, I don't see any issues with your setup. When rendering in V-Ray 7, the image looks like the left screenshot (view_03.jpg). I compared it with V-Ray 6 and got the same results. The right-hand side image seems rendered with Rendering Primitives (Render Setup > Settings > Color Management) set to sRGB rather than ACEScg. Make sure it's set to ACEScg.

          Hello Aleksandar,
I was sure my color management settings were set correct in the render setup, I ran a second test to make sure and I am still experiencing the same issue. I have tried using a custom OCIO file and still get the same error.

I also tested on multiple other workstations in my studio, and we are getting the same exact error.

I'm troubleshooting the scene as we speak. Can you try the following for me:
              1. Switch to CPU
              2. Render (just wait until the LC starts calculating) -> Color should be ACES
              3. Switch back to GPU
              4. Render -> Color should be ACES
              5. Resave the scene and the issue should'nt appear again

Not yet sure what's causing this, but at least you can continue working until I find out.

Thank you, Aleksandar. It works perfectly now! In 3D Max, the GPU is the starting render engine by default, and the fault could lie in that.

I have found the culprit—the "Use System Memory for Textures" option, which is active by default in V-Ray 7. It seems to ignore the ACEScg setup. I logged it (internal bug-tracker id: VGPU-6668 ). Switching to CPU and back to GPU simply disables the checkbox, which is why it resolves the issue.
