  • Crash Saving Deep Renders

    Hi all

I don't know what's happen or what's changed, but suddenly 3Ds Max 2025.3 crashes when trying to render deep EXR or VRST sequences. It always happens at the end of the frame as the file is saving and the next frame is beginning. I tried reverting from V-Ray 7 to V-Ray 6, still getting the crash. I've tried on the simplest possible test scene with cubes, and on complex scenes, still get the crash. It's always after the first frame finishes and the files tries to save. I've tried this experiment on multiple machines and it happens every time. Saving EXR or VRImg files that aren't deep works just fine, but as soon as I tick on to save deep data, I get the crash.

    Anyone else experience this?

    Thank you!

Interestingly, rendering via V-Ray GPU does not have this issue.

I just tested this on a simple scene without any issues. Mind if you attach your own (the cube one)? Also, please include the .dmp file (3dsmax_minidump.dmp in the Windows temp folder) created after the crash.

Hello! I just thought I was losing my mind this morning, as at first I suddenly couldn't reproduce the issue. Then I realized I had deleted the VrayOptionRE render element. I added it back, and when setting the "deep merge fragment mode" to "by render ID and z depth" I get the crash. I tried the other modes and it didn't cause a crash.

I also want to note in my testing, I was able to reproduce this in V-Ray 6.2 and in 3DS Max 2024, and on multiple machines in both Windows 10 and 11.

        I've attached the mini dump!

Thank you. Turns out we already have this issue logged (internal bug-tracker id: VMAX-8667). I'll see if we can bump its priority.

Oh! Thank you! Is there a list online somewhere I can check in the future to see if an issue I'm having is already logged?

The log is internal. When there's movement on the case, somebody (Support, QA, Devs) usually writes in the threads, so hang on.
Otherwise, we post the log ID in the forum thread. If you ever encounter a thread, discussing an issue you're having, report it there. If an ID is available, we'll check its status.
