  • Black Puffiness

A colleague of mine having problems with this render and I'm not sure how to solve it.
The problem is the black puffiness around the balusters (uprights holding the handrail up )

The AA settings are default adaptive QMC
    Cheers

Geoff, its just GI shadows that are causing the "puffiness"

If you increase your dark multiplier you can remove some of the darkness, the other thing to do is to increase the environment light a little.

What is the multiplier of your secondary bounces?

    Oh nice image anyway!!!!!
I personally would worry about this little problem!

      Thanks jacksc02

I always try to avoid the light and dark multipliers. I thought they were similar to using curves in photoshop (I'm probably completely wrong there)

There is no environment. Just 2 vray lights I think.

The secondary bounce multiplier is at 1.

He has decided to shop them out anyway, but still would like any more suggestions to remove them.

Perhaps try a different look up method ,Also you can probably get away with lowering the GI thresholds and upping the Hsph's also look at increasing the subs on the Vray lights

You could try to render with light cache for both first and secondary multiplier, uncheck store direct light in lightcache rollout, and check prefiltering. The puffiness as you call it is a typical undersampling problem. If that area gets affected by the Vray lights directly, the above method could work. If not, you could render with QMC for first bounce, then this problem should definately disappear.

I should clarify that by lowering I meant loosening the thresholds like Da_Elf said 0.3 should be a good start
