  • EXR region gamma mismatch in elements

Can anyone tell me what's going on here?

32bit EXR rendered and then loaded back into VFB (Vray Next) to render a region. Works fine with RGB and light select, but render elements (lighting, GI, specular etc.) appear to show gamma correction - or rather lack of it. I guess that makes sense - the EXR is linear, but the region displays as gamma corrected.

My aim is a workflow whereby everything matches so I can directly save out the multilayer EXR or individual passes without any intervention in Photoshop.

If you've saved the EXR linear, there shouldn't be any difference between the image and the region with whatever Display Correction you've set afterwards in the VFB (presumably sRGB in your case - double-check this). Also, if you're using 3ds Max 2024+, check the Color Management options (Rendering > Color Management) and make sure it's set to Gamma Workflow (since the ACES workflow was not yet introduced in V-Ray NEXT). If that doesn't help, do send the scene and the image that you're loading so that we can troubleshoot.

No, 2020 so no colour management.

I'll do something else with a simpler scene and check for behaviour, as mentioned they're identical other than the render elements. I do have it set to save VFB corrections to the RAW (EXR) file, so maybe that's it, but it only seems to do it for RGB passes, not lighting e
      elements.
