materials stay black in slate material editor

Hi my materials stay black in the material editor I've tried all the suggestion from this (added link at the bottom) article without any changes, I've reinstalled vray, 3dsmax and made sure i have the latest graphic card driver. nothing works ... is there something i might be missing ?

Try reinstalling the Microsoft C++ Visual Redistributable (a setup file is included in the V-Ray installation folder here: "C:\Program Files\Chaos\V-Ray\3ds Max 20XX\utils\vc_redist.x64.exe").
