displacement could be partially involved, but its hard to say without looking at the scene.

Do you have any glass objects, that could be occupying the same space or very close.

I seem to remember something about a similar problem that involved glass object which was freeze the lightcache calc.

Maybe try removing all glass objects (if any) and try to render.

..... i think this was the thread

          Not 100% sure tho

Also make sure your not lowering the visibility property of an object below 1 for any reason.

So far in my experience, the freezing light cache issue has been related to running out of memory. For me, this is usually because of trying to render images that are larger then 2K and involve displacement.
My theory is that dynamically generated geometry (as is generated while subdividing polygons for displacement or smoothing) can get so massive because we're not just generating the geometry for a single bucket, we're generating it for the whole scene at once because the Light cache doesn't use buckets.
The solution for me was to lower the Max subdivisions by increasing the max edge length in the displacement settings. It's usually set for 4 pixels so cranking it up to 7 or 8 can reduce the amount of excess geometry generated.

            Hope this helps.
