Just a side-note, I still get the ocassional off-colored bucket when rendering DR on stills. I've mentioned in the past - comps are seeing each other and seeing textures just fine. I don't know what causes it exactly. Different processors?

Black background is usually from not seeing maps at all or not seeing the Irradiance Map. My comps do see them - but are very slightly discolored - it's amost unnoticeable unless you look closely (and usually enough that I have to photoshop parts out.) I think this issue happens at larger render sizes but can't confirm. It could also be due to processor differences.
In other words Paul - I think your problem may be a totally different issue.

For your issue, I would run through this post to see if youre configured properly. One of my posts lays it out:

Here's two screenshots of what I am talking about. They are perfect bucket sizes - and I've seen it develop while watching the VFB and regular buffer in the past. Sometime it becomes more apparent when I adjust brightness values. This isn't the first scene this has happened with. It goes back to older versions of Vray. It seems to only happen/be noticeable when I render out very large sizes (2800 px wide +) for print. The rest of the scene will render out fine (textures, IRmap, etc) with the very same computers involved.

Thanks Vlado. It was bucket mode.
