  • Weird aliasing in shadow

    Hi everyone,

See the thumb for my little problem :

    settings :
vray light as sun (sphere 16subdiv 3 multiplier no decay)
hdri for vray environnement not for background
    ground texture is 4000x4000 png

    Any tips appreciated

It looks more like texture filtering problem to me... what is the resolution of your road bitmap?

    Best regards,

it looks like the tip of the arrow thats at the edge of the screen (and not in shadow) is showing the same aliasing. I think maybe the map is not big enough for the area you're mapping. what percentage of the surface thats being mapped are we seeing in that image?

yeah its something to do with the PNG... you can see the arrow near the top left hand corner of the screen is showing the exact same problem.

Your 4000x4000 PNG may not be big enough if what you seeing on screen at the moment is just a very small part of that PNG... mabye try turning the bitmap blurring down to 0.01 in the bitmap rollout in the material see if that has any affect... might just make the problem clearer.

I reckon you will need a bigger PNG still. Or a bunch of smaller ones.

actually im sure in PS his textures look fine, ive notices that sometime its a problem between max's filters and vray where with filtering on you get really blurry textures at a: far distance and b: extream angle to the camera. Then when you turn it off the distance and the angled to camera work well but the normal close up parts look un-AA'ed

turn the filtering to none on the bitmap. That should clear it up. You can always increase the blur on the bitmap as well to clean it up

                Thanks for the help guys
I have tried to put a jpg instead of a png, and turn the filtering to none but the same problem occurs... I think daforce is right, my bitmap is not big enough for that particular view...

Just a guess but would the VrayBMPFilter help this? So instead of a jagged edge it may produce a blurred soft edge. From the description of the bmpfilter:
The VRayBmpFilter map produces a smooth map by interpolating the bitmap pixels, but without applying any additional blurring or smoothing.
it seems like it may help. Just a guess though.

I don't know if using the bmpfilter will really fix it.

if making even higher resolution maps is a problem you could try to break your map up so things like road surface arrows and text were layered over the top of the street material using seperate uvw coordinates. this would allow you to basically concentrate the resolution of something like the arrow to one area instead of spreading it over the entire street surface.
