what kind of speed difference is there between vray DOF and using final blur?
benchmark or something would be good. maybee Vlado can find a way of modifying the current DOF to produce similar times? I think a lot of people at the moment dont really use much dof just because of timeframes

total rendertime 48 seconds standard finalDOF
total rendertime 1:44 minute standard dof vray
you cant even begin to compare quality... ive never understood why the inbuild DOF's are so poor for all render engines, or they take forever to render or require a dozen passes...

Heya Joost - not that you need it at this stage but I had to use pro optic suite for a job once and if I wanted to get flare + image in one go you can use a camera projection trick to get around it - I had to use this with mental ray to avoid sampling issues too. It's pretty much a case of render everything with vray / other as usual with no dof effect, then take your rendered sequence, make a 100% self illuminated scanline material with a cameramap per pixel map in the diffuse colour, load your vray rendered sequence into the cammap and then assign this mat to everything in the scene - then you can do a scanline render with no lights and get the buffers you need for certain effects. Stupid admittedly but it worked...
P.s. more nice looking mograph stuff

renascent- I would look into richard rosenmans DOF pro v2.0. Its fantastic and you can run a sequence of frames through it for animations. You still have to do a zdepth pass but you can do a scanline pass in a matter of seconds.

Although too noisy, the Vray Dof seems more accurate in terms of bokey brightness, whereas final dof's look low dynamic range, although they state on their website it does, so maybe it is because your lights are not so strong? You can contact StudioGijs for 3D visualization and 3D modeling related services and on-site training.
