I think one of the issues that's creating the problem is that even though we're told that VIZ is the same as MAX with a few features missing there are many other differences buried deep within the programing that make it difficult to create one plugin that will work for both programs. I think MAX is always the priority and VIZ will follow. I'm sure eventually we'll get a working version. Until then we'll have to be patient.

Here is a ZIP file which contains the following files:
(*) vraydummy60.max
(*) vraydummy60.xml
needed to run the DR under VIZ 2006.
Copy them (overwrite) on all the render-slaves as well as the client machine.
Download vraydummy_DR

Thanks Teddi and Nikki and for the email flino, these did the trick. Now I -know- you guys love us VIZ users after all. My spawner is running. I don't know what's different about these dummy files than the ones I made, but they work! Now all I have to do is get it all working on the network. Stay tuned![/u]

I just compared the content between the new XML file and the ones that my backburner created and mine is much smaller, many parts are missing. I created this file about five times. I wonder if there is a setting that controls the amount of data that goes into this file?

arrobert,
what does your Vrspawner.log look like?(it would be interesting to see what it is supposed to look like when things go right)...mine still stops at the xml file and can't open it. The differences i see betwen you and me is where you have your viz on you machine. i went with the default location and it is in a "Cadd" folder under program files where yours is simply under the "program files" folder. Do you only have Viz 2006 on your machine? I have previous Viz versions on my machines which is (i guess) why it defaulted to the kind of install that it is.

Finally...we got it to work...here is what we did
1. We uninstalled Viz 2006 from the server computer.
2. We reinstalled Viz 2006 to that same computer but changed the install path of viz from just plain "viz 2006" to "autodesk viz 2006".
3. I reinstalled vray and all the associated files including the latest xml and max and ini files you sent.
4. tested and now 4 buckets render instead of two and 2 of them have the id of the server machine.
Bottom line, apparently, based on how you are writing your stuff, vray dr needs to be installed with a viz that has been installed with the word autodesk.

I had similar problems setting up DR on our simple peer-to-peer network here at work, but with some help from Nikki, was able to get it working. I've since created a step by step tutorial on what I did over at The VizDepot. Note that you will have to register to see the Tutorial. It can be found by selecting "Tutorials" on the navbar up top, then selecting the V-Ray category.
Hopefully, it will be of help to someone. Everyone here has been such a help to me so I'm happy to give back any way that I can.
Thanks,
