  • My tires look "bubbly", any ideas?

Hi iam trying to texture an f1 tyre, however it looks a bit bubbly if you know what i mean. The Mesh itself is straight and has no round top, however using an hdri as a reflection map and the refl. glossiness of the material set 0,55 makes it look bubbly. Any idea on how to achieve a rubber look without getting this look i have?

    Thx in advance

    Ralf

A referance of what you are trying to reach would be good.

unless you're doing an AD campaign for a tire company then I would concider using an environment to reflect, and not actually reflecting real objects.
Having to use 50 subdivisions....just seems a bit overkill unless it's the Main attraction.

The bubbliness.... I don't know. What does the model look like (ie, wireframe). You may need to harden up those edges between the ridges.

          Hi!
maybe your tire is too black, and as Morbid Angel said it seems there is
no bump map to show some little rubber details.

I think MEdiadream is right that your tire is probably too black. Also, the reflection looks a bit too hot and sharp (i.e. lower both the reflect color and the reflect glossy). In fact I'd turn off trace reflections all together (under Options) and just have the highlight on the tire as I doubt you'd see any reflection in even a new tire.

Do you have smoothing groups applied to the mesh? I looks like the there are too few smoothing groups, try reducing the angle in autosmooth or apply manually.

I guess its not a mesh issue?

This is the original picture and my mesh. Any ideas?
There is no bump map, the sttings i displayed up in the starting post are all the settings i made for this material.

What would do to make the tyre look like the photos:

1)Turn the Reflection color to White. Click Fresnel reflections. Unlock Fresnel IOR and set it to like 2 or 3.

2)Turn your glossiness to about 0.7. Reduce Subdivs to about 24. Check Use Interpolation for speed.

                  3) Use a quality HDRI map (something good from like the Dosch or Sachform catalog) in the environment slot, at least for reflection/refraction. Don't be afraid to crank up the Vray HDRI multiplier to exaggerate the reflection brightness.

Of course I'm guessing at approximate values... hope this gets you started though.

seems to me that the smoothing groups on tires are way too soft, producing the round effect.

This seems to be the trick...

Great tip there, seems to work now very well...

What a wonderful day it is.....

                      Cheers
