I've come the conclusion after a few days of experimentation, that I can't get Linear Workflow to look good in exterior scenes. I don't know why, but I've tried different types of lighting - direct sun, gradient maps in the environment, and the vray sky system. All the renders look washed out. Anyone else experience this?

Linear WorkFlow and Exteriors

At first, yes. But I'm using linear for everything now, and most of my work is exteriors. Part of it is tweaking yout materials, just like it was for interiors. Another thing I had to do though was jack up my sun higher than I had been accustomed to. Without that, the sun wasn't enough brighter than the enviro to create shadows.sigpic

If you use photometric lights in conjunction with exposure you should get
quite good results. (IES Sun or Direct with a multiplier of 50+). If you use
a "sun" with a multiplier of 1 like most people do it just won´t look realistic.
It´s like the attempt to create a sunlight situation with a bulb. No matter how
carefully you adjust your gamma .. it just won´t look right.
I have given an explanation with sample images some time ago .. but I can´t seem to find the thread at the moment.
I´ll give you a link when i find it.
cheers

Same here, but I was trying to dim the light as it was washed out, not to increase them....
I guess it worth trying backAlain Blanchette

I forgot about that long thread and your images. That was very impressive. I'll have to give your suggestion another try again. I don't think the sun/sky system supports very high multipliers with LWF at the moment as the sky will brighten significantly in turn. Ill have to investigate into other forms of lighting. Thanks bubat for the convincing tip that it is possible.

jujubee, you can use an ies sun in conjunction with the vray sky map. It works really well and should work well with LWF

Where do you find the vray sky map?

Thanks for the tip Jackson. It works - colors seem better. Only problem now is that shadows are not as sharp/clean as using a linear exponential 1/2.5 setting.
