  • Backburner, Spawner as services... but on x64

    Hello,

I installed the BB and Spawner on one of the workstation which happened to have XP x64 OS. I installed the services as I did on 32-bit workstations. No success! In task manager these services (serversvc.exe and vrayspawner60.exe) come up without *32 which mean 32-bit process.

However, when I run these as apps they work correctly and with asterisk.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks,
    Szymon

Well, to the best of my knowledge Max is still a 32 bit application and both BB and Vrayspawner are launching this 32 bit app...

If you run them as apps - yes they appear as 32-bit. But when you install them as services an run them as usual - they simply don't work. I.e. the viz is not started in server mode (it is the case with BB and Spawner).

Has anyone managed to run Spawner and Backburner as services on x64 machine?

        Cheers

I'm afraid we'll have to wait for a true 64-bit 3dsmax for this to be possible. Still, you can try to ask on the 3dsmax support forum, maybe someone knows an answer.

          Best regards,

            maybe iam wrong but...

The reason for being a service is to start running during the boot procedure, right?. If i understand correctly you want to just switch the x64 machine on and then start the rendering job on another right? Well i just drag a shortcut of the spawner and the BB into the autostart. Thats what i would do but maybe i just dont understand the service problem!?

              ralf,

autostart entries only get started if you log on - services already run before logging on.
i guess that makes a difference for render farms with a lot of computers (unless you auto-logon)

other than that - services can easily be managed from remote computers using the mmc (microsoft management console)
for processes you need specialized tools

I haven't tested vrayspawner60 yet (although it installed as service just fine) but backburner server is working fine as service under XP64 for me.

The main reason for me using the Spawner & Backburner as services is that they function transparently.

I installed the serversvc as on 32-bit system i.e. via command line typing serversvc -install. This service however fails to start 3dsviz in server mode.

Again, when I launch the server as application it appears in task manager as serversvc.exe *32 but when launched as service it has no asterisk whatsoever. I can't tell where I am making mistake,

                  thanks

It does show up with *32 for me. Granted, I'm on Max8 with backburner 3... the version of Backburner that comes with your version of Viz could be part of the problem.
