Here is a Sanctuary I'm working on and can't seem to shake the artifacts at the base of the wood pews. They seem to have migrated form the top of the pews to the base. See attached. Here are my settings.

    640X480
    Secondary Ray Bias: .001
    IR 1.0
    LC 1.0
Adap. Sub. 0 min 2 max .1 threshold
    Catmul Rom
    IRR Map-medium 40/20
    Least Square/overlapping
    QMC Sampler .85/.003/16/1.0
    Maxtree 60
    min leaf 0
    face/level .5
    Light Cache 500/.05/screen scale/4 passes/8 interp. samples/nearest filter

31 lights all have 125 diffuse subdivision

    Hi

    try Adaptive AA @ 2 ~6
    QMC Sampler .8/.003/16/2.0
    face/level 1.0

are your lights stored with the irradiance map? if so uncheck that and reduce subdivs depending on the lights size.

Also you may want to reset your lightcache to roughly these settings:
    1000 subdivs
    sample size to standard 0.02
    uncheck store direct light.
pre filter to 100 or there abouts
and i always use a fixed filter.

Is there any glossy reflection on the wood material?

      Best regards,

Yes, Vlado. The wood has a 20% reflecttion with .8 glossiness, 16 sub. div.
and a max depth of 8.

In that case, instead of keeping the light subdivs so high, you can try to increase the glossy subdivs for materials; also depth 8 for reflections is too much in that case 2 or 3 should be ok.

Is there a rule of thumb which we can use to determine the adequate subdiv value?

no ... larger the light, the more subdivs required because the light is covering more area.. experimentation is the key.
