  • max's "Scene States" feature does not work?

has anyone notice that SceneStates in max8 does not work well with Vray? every time i saved out the states, it will work until i reopen the max file. all the data is gone. does it has anything to do with Vray? let me know if you have the same problem. thx

I never really got it to work anyway, well.

It clears your slot, but if you apply the same material to a new object you sometimes will get a duplicate material, and sometimes you won't. Horrible Horrible, Horrible.

That way, if you change an attribute you never know which objects it's Actually going to change.

do a forum search. There was a lightlister posted that is tweaked to work with vraylights (lightlister is just a script anyways )

I would love it if vray settings were saved with the scene state in max 8, complete with irradiance map and lightcache saved file path. You could create render passes in each state for easy back and forward tweakings! Definitely a must have! An example would be:

          State1 : Complete interior scene

State2: Interior scene with no windows

          State3: Background only scene

All of this -tedious- changes with one click!

            1 more

            for animation composite:

State4: everything ON but trees/people/cars hidden

State5: matte on Background with trees/people/cars ON

it sucks when i have to save a multiple copy of my huge scene.

I'm a little confused by this thread. Scene States isn't perfect, but I have used it with Object Properties and Layer Properties successfully for quite some time.

I use Layer Properties to hide layers easily in different states, and object properties to change the Vray Properties of objects like Matte or whatever. I haven't done this much in 8 but I did it MANY times in v7 without issue.

The material properties I didn't use very much so I can't say much about that.

And no -- there was no irradiance maps or rendering settings saved (that would be nice) ... this was just scene related setup.

i used scene states without *too* much trouble in my last project.. though i only really used it to keep track of my layer states and light on/off states. to try and optimize somewhat for various scenes
