  • Object is not invisible

    Hello,

I have to render many objects which become invisible over time. So I gave them a vray Material and animated the refraction color from black to white.
I also animated the reflection color to pure black.
    IOR is set to 1.001.

It works pretty good for most objects. But in my scene there is an object which renders totaly black when it should be transparent (-> invisible).

I think I have double checked everything. It works fine with a max standard material (opacity = 0).
And the vray material of that object also works fine on other objects.

Is there a bug in my geometry? I have imported it as a STEP file (with PowerTranslator). Then converted it into a mesh. Then used PowerBoolean to devide it. Than I have converted it and used the SLT-check to ensure that the geometry is allright.

Do you have an idea what may be wrong?

    Regards,
    Mirko

Have you tried to use an < Output > map (Set to 0.0) in the opacity slot, rather than playing with refractions... ?

      Thank you Candelero!!!

I didn't notice that there is an Opacity slot at all in the VRay Mat. ...

With a black output-map it works fine!!! Thanks alot!!!

But on the other side - now the object does not turn transparent in viewport ...
Is there an option to show it in viewport, too?

      Regards,
      Mirko

Not actually sure about that. I doubt that.

But here is a workaround, use a Shell mat - set the mat for the viewport with (standard - opacity 5% for example) and use the VRay + Otput for the rendering mat... Not tried it , but might work !

Yes - that works indeed! But that way I have to animate all maps twice. First the rendering mat. - then the viewport mat.
That sounds like a lot of work ...

Maybe that would be point for the wishlist: "make Vray-Mat opacity-channel changes visible in viewport"

          Thanks

Why not use the Output map as an instance for both of the mats.

That's what I have tried. But to make something invisible I need a BLACK color in the opacity channel. To make it in viewport invisible I need a WHITE color in the refrac. channel.

I would need something like a "cross conection". But I am not familiar with scripting.

                Hi,

You can place an output map on top of one the instances and tick the invert checkbox.

Have u tried animating the visibility track in 3dsmax?

@dino: Thanks for that tip!!! That's apretty good idea. Unfortunately my viewport doesn't want to show the transparent objects if their material has too many nested scopes.

                    But anyway - Vielen Dank!

@panthon: Yes I have tried it. But then Vray would need years to render it. It seems to be better to use the VRay-Mat Opacity or Refraction settings to fade things away.
