  • Gamma Correction with Textures

Just discovered the joys of LWF (no more nasty dark corners!) , but problem Im encountering is textures being over exposed and washed out. Presumably there is a more elegant way of fixing this within Max / Material Editor / VRay settings rather than going through all my textures and darkening in photoshop to allow for gamma correction

    thanks in advance

Have you tried reducing the intensity of the lights in your scene i find
that you only need low intensity settings using LWF.

thanks for advice, but lighting is spot on when I use and over-ride material....just the textures are really "washed out"

Do your materials look ok in the material editor or are they washed
out If they look ok in the editor,

Are you rendering to vrays frame buffer or max's try using the vray
          frame buffer.

Hi ene, just thinking back to when i went through all this, how the max
frame buffer looked really washed out but the vray buffer looked good

Just wondering if he should try the vray buffer on the chance thats he's
getting similar problems to what i had, ya never know

thats pretty understandable, the number of threads on this subject is
unbeleivable, needs a forum all of its own

Now how much of our lwf technique will be outdated with 1.5?

though....it would explain the team s latest silent on this....

Like timmitron said, you can use the color correct plugin and change the gamma to 2.2 (also works great when converting a scene and you're using RGB color values you want to keep).

Or, you can change the gamma in the bitmap loader to Override = 2.2

Or, you can change the system setting in the Gamma tab (under Customize-Preferences) to override all bitmaps to 2.2 (not really recommended if using HDR images).

Just be aware - if you're using Viz 2007, there's a bug where the material editor is not displayed gamma-corrected when gamma correction is enabled. So, if you bring a bitmap in and override it when loaded to 2.2, the material editor sample will be too dark, but the material will render correctly. If you're using MAX, make sure the 'Affect Material Editor' checkbox is selected so it previews correctly. I personally override it when the bitmap's loaded.

thanks to all, will try suggestions tomorrow

yes, lwf is great but coming from an "old skooler" it would be nice to see a much simpler "gamma correction" on/off button

..it was so nice when all we had to worry about was our raytrace level
