  • Proxy

Hi, when i convert a ship hull to proxy, it seems to "destroy" the smoothing.. is this a known cause? is there a way around it? vray 1.47.03, max 7.

Sounds like you will have to collapse modifier the stack to an editable mesh before you convert to vray proxy.
    Cheers,

are you talking about the way it looks in the viewport or when rendered? in the viewport the proxy will look like crap but there should be no difference at render time. Just a thought

You can apply a turbosmooth instead of smoothing groups and then convert to proxy. However, beware! Turbosmooth only works if the object has been properly modelled, e.g. all quads...

the model is imported from rhino, so thats probably not an option.

If it comes from rhino, try and do an auto-welding with a very small threshold, so to weld only coincident vertices.
Then make sure you apply a smooth modifer to the stack.
Most rhino meshes come in with unwelded vertices, hence smoothing will crap up as you import-export.

I can tell you i successfully exported big meshed rhino objects to vrayproxies, and rendered them with correct sm groups, so the idea does work.
