  • Crashing in 1.5!

Is anyone else having problems with 1.5 crashing out of Max (I'm actually on Viz 2005 though)? Since I've installed it with the virtual dongle and tried it out I've had very frequent crashes, like every 10 min. or so, sometimes as quick as 30 secs. I'm still trying to see if there's a pattern to it but I can't seem to recognize anything, sometimes it's when I'm in the material editor, sometimes when I'm moving the camera around or adjusting settings, but never during rendering (but sometimes when I cancel).

I set up 1.5 in a copied directory of Viz so I still have 1.47 running and I can work all day in that with no problems. I'm thinking that it might be related to instlling it in the duplicated directory. I could install 1.5 in the normal plugin directory but with all of these crashes I'm very hesitant.

    Anyone having any similiar problems?

Yes, I have had similar problems. VRay was loosing it's connection to the license server and would take forever to time out on the ME or often would crash. I thought it was just my bad home network...anyways I haven't had an issue since I disabled the vrlserver as a service and just run it as a program from my startup folder.

Mine is set up to just start from the startup folder already. Anyways, did you have these problems with 1.5 or 1.47?

Since you are using it with the virtual dongle, which program is in your startup folder? The "virtual dongle" does not require vrlservice.exe or vrlserver.exe to be running at all if you have a local license on your machine.

Also another question: what is your viewport driver? Does switching the driver help for these issues?

... strange vray 1.5 crashes nearly everytime i press the

                "show correction controls"

button in the vray frame buffer...

at first i thought it could be a weird kind of licence problem, so i installed the demo -> same thing....

                any hints?

                best regards

Do you click any other buttons between showing the VFB and clicking the "Show correction controls"? Is this during the rendering or after rendering is complete?

                    Hello vlado,

Well I tried to find a pattern to determine when exactly the crash occurs; so far I can say that it does not seem to be affected by the display driver (tried open gl, direct 3d and software -> crashes everytime) the crash occurs every time when I press the button during rendering time, even when no GI is calculated… I think I remember that at one time it even crashed when I pressed the button after the rendering was finished, I will try to repeat that. All test scenes I used were very simple (boxes, 1 vray sun, 1 vray physical camera, vray-sky).

                    Best regards

                    Andy

I was referring to dlparisi's problem when I mentioned the display drivers; I'm sure they don't matter for the VFB In what way does 3dsmax crash? Does it create a crash dump with the option to send to Autodesk? If this is the case, you can try to email me the file 3dsmax_minidump.dmp which is created by the 3dsmax crash handler in the temporary windows folder right after a crash (this is typically "c:\documents and settings\[user name]\Local Settings\Temp" unless changed manually).

                      Best regards,

... well I just rendered my test scene again and this time it even crashes without touching the “show correction controls” button (last time just after the rendering was finished…) I will check if it has something to do with vraysun/vraysky…

I found the cause for the crashes; it was my vray camera, after deleting it no further crashes occurred…

                          best regards

Ok, very good, thanks for the pointer - now I know where to look (although it does seem somewhat strange).

One more question: what is your graphics card and drivers?

                              Best regards,
