  • material max depth problem

given my experience with vray, i hardly feel qualified to be reporting bugs. but after spending the past 3 hours trying to figure out why my image was not rendering properly, and finally figuring out how to make it work, i can only chalk this up to a bug in the program.
    here is what was happening:
i have a scene with a series of vertical glass panels (serving as structural reinforcing for a curtain wall). the camera is positioned so that we are looking through maybe 8 vertical planes, then through the curtain wall and to the outside. i have some stainless steel columns outside the curtain wall. the columns should be showing a reflection of the interior space as well as an hdri map i have in their material environment slot.
when i render the view, the reflection on the columns is not showing up, it just renders as black (ie: my maximum reflection depth colour). so i figured it had to do with the max depth of the glass materials, right? so i increased both the reflect and refract max depth to 16, 24, 32, but still the reflections are black.
finally, out of frustration i enable the reflect / refract depth global override and set it to 32. voila! the reflections show up. i then lowered it to 24, 16, and finally 12, and the reflections are still showing up.
so is this a bug? or am i missing something?

i've attached 3 images, one showing the columns behind the glass, without the vertical reinforcing. the 2nd is how the reflection was showing up when i was experiencing the problem. the 3rd is the final solution using the global override.

again, i'd love to know if this is a known issue, or if i'm just missing something.

i'm just about to kick off for the night and go for dinner. i will re-create my problem and send you the file if you like. but i'll get to it tomorrow.
      thanks for your interest.

Not exactly. It also has to do with the reflection depth of the columns. If you think what is happening there, when a ray goes through all the glass panels, and then hits column, the column checks to see if the ray depth is greater than its own reflection depth setting. Since you didn't say that you changed that, I assume is was the default. In which case, the material returns right away without calculating any reflections.

In general this is not a bug. Adjusting the ray depth globally may be easier than doing so for each separate material.

vlado, thanks for the explanation...i guess that makes sense in an illogical sort of way
i suppose in a similar situation it would always make sense to use the global override so you would never have to worry about any object / material not rendering properly if it is behind multiple transparent planes. the good thing is i will be able to recognize and solve this issue very quickly in the future.

jacksc02, still want the settings / scene? i think this is the answer to the problem...
