  • Fine Detail

Howdy all... what variable would I tweak to increase fine detail? I have a strip mall - exterior scene that has dryvit details that are not being picked up. The detail is the same color as the body. The sun is place in real time so I can't mess with that. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Save

A related question possibly..... when I burn my gamma by using the sRGB and save it as a OpenEXR it looks great, but I have a white box around everything that touches the background... my trees in front of my VRaySky... Any clue how to get around this?

well, one of the issues might be premultiplication - you need a compositing app that can deal with its alpha correctly. As for the fine detail, better aa such as using the adaptive subdivision method works better but if you're using glossy or blurry effects like dof / motion blur / soft reflections it will slow things down a lot. Try using a sharper antialiaser such as mitchell or catmull too.

        Fine Detail

I'll try catmull, thanks... I use PhotoShop for post. Would you recommend something else? If I save as a TIFF and put a curve on it PhotoShop I am fine, but it is an extra step.

        Thanks for the reply

Strangely enough photoshop has the worst support for alphas out of any image editing program I use - you'll probably have to use the defringe and remove layer matting options to get rid of the halo or as you say do the gamma curve in photoshop.

              EXR

I have found out you can un-check the premultipli box when you open the EXR in PhotoShop.... that solved the white box issue. My other question is how do I get detail to show more. The arrow shows detail in the dryvit that just isn't showing... see the arrow on the left? That detail goes around the front of the building. Other than changing the color what can I do?

You'd probably want to do an ambient occlusion pass and comp it over that texture, or else if you're on 1.5 just check the detail enhancement checkbox in the irradiance map.
