  • White dots on reflections with VRAYSUN!

    Hi!

This scene is created by using a VRAYSUN and VRAYSKY, in combination with a VRAY physical cam. NO GI here. With precalculated GI, result was about the same.

Well, as you can see in this video:

    http://www.elxut.com/vray/White_dots.mov

lots of flickering white dots appear on reflections. I suspect they are from the VRAYSUN, when i turn it off, they disppear. I post my settings too for u to check. Any help will be appreciated.

There is a similar post but none of the solutions posted there helped with this situation. I´ve also tried using No AA filtering with no success. I find using Vray sun in animations extremely risky as these dots keep on appearing with different scenes. After testing all kinds of GI combos and all types of AA settings, I thought it could be a license issue, but everything seems to run just fine.

that's not the sun, but the adaptive qmc i guess...try Adaptive Interpolation....also happens with HDR reflections for me

Couldnt get any answer what is wrong so far...raising samples beyond sanity didnt help, switching to AdaptiveAA did...but that's rather bad with many glossy materials and moblur

Unfortunately, switching to Adaptive Subdivision doesnt solve the problem...WDOD, white dots of death, still show up.

As you said I think its from the vray sun. Its just because the sun is so bright. you could change the size multiplier down to zero and it should disappear but that will also effect your shadow crispness. I think Vlado was concidering a box for have the sun visible or invisible.

        hope this helps.

I was having the same problem, checking sub-pixel mapping helped a little, but then I had to lower the hdri in the environment slot, but still the dots appeared. I think it's something related to glossys and light intensity, you have to lower the intensity alot... It was nice to have a solution for this, I supose clamp output should solve this on the fly...

I just ran into the same thing but I wasn't using vray sun. I ran a few tests and it looks like changing the Adaptive subdivision Min. rate to 1 helped (I had it on 0 when I had the spots). Checking sub-pixel mapping and/or clamp output didn't work. I am rendering out an animation test now to check it out.

Yeah its just the reflections from the sun... been a few threads about this so far. Try turning of AA filtering all together. That helped for someone but their problem was slighlty different.

yeah, i guess the problem is different, because turning AA off doesnt solve the issue. I have been forced to revert from a vraysun setup to a direct light setup

Because of such issues, the VRaySun has an "invisible" option for the next releases.

Well, somehow i feel relieved. Our current project will not benefit from vraySUn + Sky combo but maybe next will...

Isn't this going to make the sun a Diffuse only? You still need a specular highight from the sun.

Most other lights in max are not visible, yet have specular components?

Reading this thread made me laugh a bit because of a project I am doing right now. At the moment I am stabilizing about 10 min of HD footage of a city from a helicopter. I have noticed in certain clips these white pixels popping in and out of certain locations. At first I thought they were errors in the HD compression, but then I realized they only appeared when the camera and (apparent) object with the white pixel were in a certain relationship to the sun. These relatively tiny objects were reflecting the sun. I know that the results posted here are certainly not desired, but I have to laugh when what seems a rendering error is in a way mimicked by reality.

Nope. It will turn it into something like a regular 3dsmax direct light.

Yeah, rendering is not only about reproducing reality... A large portion of the V-Ray code is there for supporting all kinds of cheats that people need from time to time

if its used in conjunction with the vray sky for environment then wont the skys visual representation of the sun reflect? therefore the reflection of the sun comes from the sky and not the vray sun. maybe its the combination of the sky and sun thats messing up the renders
