  • New VRay Edu 1.5 install crashes

    Hello,

I've been searching the forum in the past 20 minutes or so for various reasons for crashes, but so far haven't found any solutions.

The 1.5 RC3 edu versions just became available for download so I installed it. I double checked that it was ok to install it over the prvious 1.47 install. When I start Max it is set to the default scanline renderer. When I go into the render settings to change over VRay, as soon as I select it, Max crashes.

I've copied the software key dll over to the default directory as instructed, but other then this, have not much clue why I can't switch to the VRay renderer. Any solutions...?

    Max 8/SP3

    Thanks.

PS: Not sure if it's useful, but I might add that at installation I left every path at the default (in the install dialog). The 3dsmax directory paths were correctly detected by the installer, and it also installed a slew of stuff into a 'Chaos Group/VRay' folder under 'Program Files' - by default.

    More update.

I've just found in one of the threads, that don't recommend replacing the cgauth (installed with 1.5 RC3) file with the one supplied by Vlado. When I leave the original cgauth file in place, then I can switch to the VRay renderer with no prollems, aside from the 'minor' fact that all the materials in the editor are black and can't render because I get a no license error.

yeah dont overwrite the cgauth file that will crash max.. as you have seen.

Are you running 32 or 64bit windows?

Max 8 only comes in 32 bit. So, yes, I'm running 32 bit.

If I don't override the cgauth file - as I mentioned - Max won't crash, but I can't render because VRay don't find the license file. In that case I have to enter info into the the license server dialog which is different than it was for 1.47. I'm not sure if I can enter anything in these fields from the 1.47 settings:

        General--
        License Server:
        Connection port:

        Online--
        User Name:
        Password:

I might need counseling soon, because I am developing a habit of fear of installing anything that has a license manager/server associated with it - unless it's something simple, like Adobe's.

PS: I'm adding more stuff as I find things, maybe will help with the trouble shooting. I installed the software license version. Also, back in september, I reformatted my HD, but after that 1.47 installed back just fine. I'm just saying this cuz I found a thread with a user having some hardware change issues between 1.47 and 1.5, and because of the HW change 1.5 didn't recognized the 1.47 license... or something along that line (but there was no resolution for that thread: http://www.chaosgroup.com/forum/phpB...er+information)

What you can do is this:

          (1) Run the v-ray license server from the Start menu > Programs > Chaos Group > V-Ray for 3dsmax > Licensing > Launch V-Ray license server
          (2) If the server tells you that there is no license, click ok and send the request number from the next dialog that appears to vray@chaosgroup.com
          (3) Paste the license key into the same dialog when you receive it.

That should be all you have to do.

          Best regards,
          Vlado
I only act like I know everything, Rogers.
