  • Distributed rendering with Viz 2007

I have followed the instructions in the vray help pages by creating the vrayspawner.ini file in the max root folder in the "server" (this should actually be called a slave or node to be consitent with max phrasing). I then try to open vrayspawner.exe and nothing happens. I know it is supposed to upen up the vraydummy file on the taskbar, but that doesn't even happen. Nothing happens. The file doesn't run. What's up? I know viz2005 required a copy of a backburner.max file to be copied an and renamed as the vraydummyxx.max. Is that something that needs to be done with viz 2007 too? I guess I could try that, but I'm not thinking that's the problem.

    Nope that didn't fix it.

There is a step by step tutorial for this over at vizdepot. I have viz 2007
here and after following the tutorial DR works like a champ. DR in viz
has been alot more stable than with max, for me.

Thanks mmikee. I tried that tutorial, and followed it very carefully step-by-step and the same thing happens. When I get to the part of opening the vrayspawner.exe, nothing happens. Not on the slave or the host machines. I don't get the minimized max file, or the tiny little vray spawner logo on the bottom task bar. I think I'll email vray support and see if there is an error log I can send them that might indicate what step I have missed.

sorry I haven't seen this sooner, been out for a bit. I wrote that tutorial for the VizDepot.....sounds like either you're missing the vrayspawner.ini file OR the path within the ini is incorrect. Have you checked to make sure the ini is pointing to the right place?

Another thing is that VIZ 2007 neglects to install a subdirectory that was in previous versions - something that vray looks for - a subdirectory called "network" under the root viz directory. Try creating that and see what happens.

Also, search the VizDepot - I'm pretty sure I uploaded my VIZ 2007 DR files. If not, PM me and I'll e-mail them to you.

Funny, I started spawner through the start menue and it worked fine. For some reason double clicking from a windows explorer folder doesn't actually start it.

              ***Update***
It still doesn't work. I'm way greatful for Matt's help in getting me the files I need. It still isn't working though. Now I get the repeating opening and closing of viz. Maybe I have the wrong type of network to be able to use dr? I can't seem to get backburner to work either, so maybe it's tied in somewhere with that problem.

I think maybe it has to do with the Backburner issues I'm having. I get an error when I try to send a job through backburner that says "error creating viz plugin instance for backburner". I have reported the problem on autodesk's forum, but never heard back.

Well I hear the new windows vista is coming out this month, maybe it's time to upgrade to max 9. I'm getting angry.

you HAVE installed VRay on the other machines, right? Did you copy those files I gave you to all the machines AND create that directory?
