Ok, I think I got it. It wasn't a bug in VRAY. It is either a bug in MAX 9 or a bad install. I couldn't use shapemerge either so I exported my site out to dwg and into MAX 8. Shape Merge worked in 8 and I had to flip my normals. I exported out of 8 as a dwg and imported back into MAX 9. All is well and now maybe I can get my work done. Thanks for the help Vlado.
