  • Shadows through glass

I've read all of the threads relating to shadows passing through glass but can't seem to get them to work.

The first thing that I tried was turning the "Affect shadows" button to "On". I then walked through each of the light types, and shadow types to see if it would clear up. Depending on the shadow type they would either be too heavy, as shown, or disappear altogether.

I'm using IR/LC as the rendering method. I apologize if I'm not giving you enough, or the right information but this is my first attempts with Vray.

About the scene: These tests are for a space that I'm working on and show etched glass, frosted glass, and clear glass against a dark walnut background. The shoes are placed in front and back of the glass as they will in the final scene.

Make sure refractive GI caustics is on in the GI rollout.
If its off then Affect shadows wont do anything

There is also a problem with glass mats in Multi/subobject materials
      Known issues:
(*) "Affect shadows" and "Affect alpha" options do not work for VRayMtl's inside a Multi/subobject material. This will be fixed as soon as possible.

There was a fix that Lukx worked out, if you put the glass material in a vrayblendmtl as the base map then affect shadow would work.

        Morbid Angel:

Yes, that was the first thing that I read (though maybe not thoroughly enough) as I must have missed the settings that DaForce is referring to.

I rerendered the scene with the Reflective/Refractive buttons on in the GI area and got pretty much the same result.

Thanks for the help on this.

I see, there's still a problem with the app. I'll just go forward with what I have then with the understanding that the shadows behind the glass will be incorrect.

Thanks for your help guys, much appreciated.

Hmmm, interesting. I thought that it might be the fact that it's a multi-sub material so I split the glass cube where the two kinds of glass changed. When I rendered it with single materials in place I got the same issue with shadowing.

Hmm odd.. care to upload a basic version of your file with no textures just the glass materials and the back wall.
Let me hac a quick look at it if you want.
